Using Disc Dots

Installing Disc Dots is simply a matter of removing them from the packaging, peeling off the adhesive backing, and sticking them to a wall. However, Disc Dots are small and use a removable adhesive that has temperature/humidity limitations. This warrants precautions and serious consideration where to install the Disc Dots so they are convenient, have a long service life, and do not pose a danger.

Be aware that safety is your responsibility.

Precautions

Here are some precautions to consider when using and installing Disc Dots.

  • Keep out of reach of children and pets. Disc Dots are small and can be swallowed or pose a choking hazard if compromised.
  • Indoor use only. Disc Dots are designed to operate from 0 - 105° F (-18 - 41° C). Extreme temperatures and humidity may weaken the adhesive.
  • One disc only. Disc Dots are designed to hold only one disc at a time.
  • Reuse. Though we do not warrantee reuse of the Disc Dots, if you cleaned your wall properly before install, you may carefully remove and reinstall Disc Dots. However, be wary that with each reuse the holding power may be reduced. Test the holding strength before reuse and use your best judgement.

Installation

(1) Get Parts, Tools, and Materials

  • Disc Dots
  • Wall cleaning supplies

(2) Choose your surface:
Review the Precautions and pick your install surface. The Disc Dot’s adhesive backing is a rubber-based, non-permanent adhesive that can bond and removed cleanly from all sorts of surfaces including wood, plastics, metal, powder coated materials, and painted materials. Surfaces may be slightly textured or uneven since the foam will mold to the surface with firm pressure. Painted surfaces should be in good condition and not show signs of flaking. Weakening paint means the adhesive may tear away the painted surface when removed. We don’t recommend installing on wallpaper since the adhesive may tear away the surface when removed. Also, glass that allows the adhesive to be exposed to sunlight will, over time, diminish the dot's holding power.

(3) Plan your layout:
It’s a good idea to roughly plan how you want to position your dots. On a table arrange the dots as desired. Use an old disc to help space the dots properly. If possible, leave room for future expansion. (PIC 2-2)

(4) Prepare the surface and work area:
Dust, dirt, and low/high temperatures on the surface will reduce the holding power of the adhesive. You should clean the surface according to the surface manufacturer’s instructions. On most surfaces a 50/50 mixture of Isopropyl Alcohol and water will clean the surface nicely (test on a small, inconspicuous area first). (PIC 2-3) Dry the surface with a lint-free cloth before application. (PIC 2-4) For an optimal bond, the temperature of the surface should be between 65º and 100º F.

(5) Apply Disc Dots:
Remove a Disc Dot from the packaging. Peel off the protective sheet on the adhesive. (PIC 2-5) Press the Disc Dot onto the surface. Apply firm pressure while rocking your finger back and forth for at least 10 seconds to bond the adhesive with the surface properly. (PIC 2-6) Repeat until you have finished your layout.

Using

Mounting a disc:
The Disc Dot's hub extends 1/8 of an inch (3.1 mm) from the wall and tightly grips your disc. The plastic rim and adhesive keep your disc a safe 3/32 of an inch (2.4 mm) from the surface. To mount a disc, align the hole on the disc with the foam hub on the dot. (PIC 3-1) Gently push the disc so the foam hub passes through the hole. (PIC 3-2) It is not necessary to force the disc against the plastic rim. (PIC 3-3)

Removing a disc:
Using 2 hands (our preference), hold the edge of the disc with one hand, and place your other hand's index finger on the foam hub. (PIC 3-4) Push in the foam hub while pulling the disc with your other hand. (PIC 3-5) The disc will pop off the foam hub. (PIC 3-6)

Using 1 hand, grab the edge of the disc with your thumb and middle finger. and place your index finger on the foam hub. (PIC 3-7) Push in the foam hub while pulling the disc with your thumb/middle finger. (PIC 3-8) The disc will pop off the foam hub. (PIC 3-9)

Removing

Disc Dots use a rubber-based, non-permanent adhesive film that you can remove cleanly from most surfaces. To remove the dot use a tool with a flat edge (eg: slotted screw driver or a putty knife). Slide the tool under the plastic rim and gently twist the tool to separate one edge of the adhesive from the wall. (PIC 4-1, PIC 4-2) Grab the edge of the rim and roll the dot off the wall.
