Invention Licensing & Attribution
Some invention design reference files will be released/sold under a license that permits you to remix, transform, and build upon the project for any purpose, including commercially. The licenses typically used are:
"CC BY-SA 4.0"
Creative Commons Attribution-ShareALike 4.0 International License for invention design reference files.
"CC BY 4.0"
Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License for digital artwork targeted for merchandise ideas.
"GPLv3"
GNU General Public License v.3 for design source code.
Terms
Laboratory 424 permit's anyone to build, modify, and sell an invention provided:
- The invention’s design reference files are marked with a CC BY-SA 4.0 or CC BY 4.0 license.
- The invention’s software (source code) files are marked with a GPLv3 license.
- You give Laboratory 424 appropriate credit (attribution) as outlined below.
Marks/Indicators
Instructables: Invention build instructions hosted at instructables will display the license near the top of the build. This license covers only the build content and design reference files uploaded to the “instructable”. It does not cover any off-site, embedded content hosted by other sites such as videos, and links in the build that take the user off-site from instructables.
Laboratory 424: Invention build instructions hosted at Laboratory 424 will display the license next to the design reference files available for download. For example:
Killbot X25 of Doom STL: “bkx25-r1.stl” is licensed under CC BY-SA 4.0.
Killbot X25 T-Shirt Logo: "bkx25-r1.svg" is licensed under CC BY 4.0.
Killbot X25 of Doom OSCAD: “bkx25-r1.scad” is licensed under GPLv3.
Killbot X25 of Doom Build Plans: “bkx25-r1.pdf” is licensed under CC BY-SA 4.0.
The license covers only the design reference file it is referencing. The rest of the content, media, and files on the invention page and the Laboratory 424 website is the property of Laboratory 424, LLC and protected by United States and international copyright law. Laboratory 424 Store: Invention and Artwork reproduction files offered at the Laboratory 424 Store will display the license on the product page, and include a "license.txt" file assigning the license for each file contained in the download package. The license covers only the design reference file it is referencing. The rest of the content, media, and files on the product page and the Laboratory 424 Store Website is the property of Laboratory 424, LLC and protected by United States and international copyright law. Limitations
Unless the content (digital or physical) is marked with a license as noted above, either on the Laboratory 424 site or other sites, it is considered the property of Laboratory 424, LLC and protected by United States and international copyright law. You may not copy nor use it for any purpose without direct permission.
Credit (Attribution)
Per the licenses noted above, you must attribute the material to Laboratory 424, but not in any way that suggests that Laboratory 424 directly endorses you or your use of the materials. Acceptable forms of Attribution:
Reproduction of Original Invention:
- Original concept invented by Laboratory 424 is licensed under CC BY-SA 4.0.
- “Our-Invention-Title” by Laboratory 424 is licensed under CC-BY-SA 4.0.
Modification of Original Invention:
- “Our-Invention-Title” by Laboratory 424 used under CC-BY-SA 4.0. Modified from original.
- “Your-Product-Title” is a derivative of “Our-Invention-Title” by Laboratory 424 used under CC BY-SA 4.0.
Notes:
- For printed material (EG: packaging, manuals) include the short form of our URL after "Laboratory 424" in parentheses. For example: "Original Concept invented by Laboratory 424 (laboratory424.com) licensed under CC BY-SA 4.0."
- For embedded content (EG: video, graphic) use the same format as noted in (1).
- Attribution font should be in a size, color, and duration (in the case of video) that is readable by the human naked eye.
- Graphic designs licensed under CC BY 4.0 may have the attribution in the product description rather than on the graphic if being digitally printed and sold on merchandise (EG: shirts, stickers).
