Q: What is the maximum thickness of the surface between the metal backing and disc mount?

A: We designed the disc mount to securely attach to 3/32 inch thick acrylic with a 24 - 30 gauge metal backing. You may be able to increase the thickness a bit if your surface material is rougher than acrylic. Best to test it first before committing to your display design.
